One of the e-mails I ignored for a while was one sent out about a survey being conducted by EMU. I finally went through all of it tonight and some of the questions perked my interest. I figured I’d share them with everyone:
- On the whole, the campus is well-maintained.
- Channels for expressing student complaints are readily available.
- Freedom of expression is protected on campus.
- Tuition paid is a worthwhile investment.
- This institution shows concern for students as individuals.
- I seldom get the “run-around” when seeking information on this campus.
- Administrators are approachable to students.
- Faculty care about me as an individual.
- The campus staff are caring and helpful.
- Most students feel a sense of belonging here.
The survey also asked about how the University treats commuters, if there was enough parking, etc.
A lot of the above questions seem to be items that are frequently talked about on this site. And those are only a slim portion of the 100+ questions in the survey. It was interesting to go through and I’d love to see the overall results, but doubt those will be shared.

Hey Mike, two questions:
* When you say this is a survey conducted by EMU, what do you mean? Who did you get it from? (This sure sounds a little like the kind of survey a consulting firm might send around….)
* You wouldn’t happen to have a link to that someplace, would you? That might be interesting to post here someplace.

Thanks for posting the full text – I was just going to do that..
It’s been a couple of weeks since I got the survey, so I don’t remember all of my answers…. However, I just clicked on your link and it let me sign in again with my E number, so I can look through and relate some of my opinions.
I know that a lot of times something would rank very high in “importance” and very low in “satisfaction.” For example, having helpful financial aid counselors is very important to me, yet I am not at all satisfied with the numerous experiences I’ve had with them in the last 3 1/2 years. The same thing happens with business offices being open during convenient hours (when you’re in class/work from 8-5 for most of the week, it’s hard to get to places like financial aid), and dorm living (for example, while I liked the privacy the Towers afforded, it was a terribly uncomfortable place in many senses of the word).
On the questions about faculty, I generally had positive answers, for while I’ve had a handful of truely terrible professors while I’ve been here, the vast majority of them have been in the good-to-fantastic range.
However, a lot of my answers seem to differ from [ASFFSDF]‘s. I do feel like I often get the “run around” on campus (see previous financial aid difficulties), I feel my tuition gets spent on things that I don’t care about and outside of my niche communities, I often don’t feel a sense of belonging on campus. My forensics and Lyceum groups are awesome, but I feel very disconnected from everything else on campus.
It’ll be interesting to see if any of the other students post their responses. I wonder how many of my experiences are just me being anti-social
