To first time EMUtalk.org readers/searchers about “Laura Dickinson Murder”

Given the national/international coverage that EMU has been receiving/subjected to because of the firing of John Fallon and “separation” of Jim Vick and Cindy Hall (which, of course, is itself a result of the cover-up of the Laura Dickinson murder), EMUtalk.org has been a little busy to say the least.  I suspect the hits will drop off quickly as this becomes yesterday’s news, a quick scan of the user stats tells me that there are an unusually high number of visitors of the site, and many of these visitors are from places well beyond southeast Michigan.

So, if you are new to EMUtalk.org– either as a local or as someone well-beyond EMU– welcome to the site.  Let me just mention three things to help you out:

Graduate Student Senate Statement on the future of EMU

Eastern Michigan University has faced a difficult time over the past seven months. We, as a community have suffered the loss of a valued member of our community – a student. We have struggled with the fact our University did not have the policies in place to handle such a tragedy. Now is the time to move forward toward a smarter, stronger, and safer Eastern.

Who is in charge here now?

Besides announcing the separation of Vick and Hall and the firing of Fallon, BoR Chair Thomas Sidlik said a number of other things, too.  You can read the whole statement here; I’ll just mention two highlights:

  • EMU is going to be run by an “executive council” chaired by Provost Don Loppnow and also consisting of Freman Hendrix, Janice Stroh, and Joseph Pollack.  With Pollack, my response was “who?!”  He is apparently in charge of the charter school system that EMU sponsors or something.
  • I’m proud to say that Sidlik singled out the English department in recognizing the Write-Link Community Connections Program!  The English department has done a lot of other cool things, but I won’t hog more EMUtalk.org space for that.

Actions by the board against Vick, Hall, McKanders, and Fallon

According to a message posted on EMU’s website, the board has taken the following actions against Vick, Hall, and McKanders. Fallon we already knew about.

“With that, the following personnel actions will be taken:
Vice President for Student Affairs James Vick – separation from the university, effective July 1, 2007
Director of Public Safety Cindy Hall – separation from the University, effective June 29, 2007
General Counsel Kenneth McKanders – disciplinary memo to permanent employee file

In another personnel matter, on July 15, 2007, the Board of Regents voted unanimously to terminate the employment contract of John A. Fallon III under provision 15.1 of his contract.

I’m not sure what a “separation from the University” entitles, or if that’s just a nice way of saying they were fired…

Update:
Well, there’s an article in The New York Times about the firings. The article talks about the departures of Vick and Hall being agreed upon a couple of weeks ago. It also says that they decided to fire Fallon via a telephone meeting on Sunday:

after learning that he “may have been contemplating additional action that would have further damaged this university,â€? said James F. Stapleton,’ … Mr. Sidlik said in an interview, “There was a general falling apart of the relationship over the last few days.â€?

I, like a lot of others, are curious what this means. The NYT article says Stapleton wouldn’t comment further and that it is likely Fallon will make a statement soon.

Student Government Response to BoR Decision to Terminate Dr. Fallon

Here is the Student Government Response to the termination of Dr. Fallon:

16 July 2007

Today marks an important day for the future of Eastern Michigan University. The EMU community is now at a crossroads. We have the option of continuing upon the path that we have followed in recent history, or we can choose to embark upon a new path that will lead us in a different direction. Today, we must choose a new direction.

“Fallon firing just latest chapter in EMU turmoil”

From the AA News, “Fallon firing just latest chapter in EMU turmoil.” It reads a bit like one of this obituaries that are written way ahead of the death of a famous person.

Actually, the AA News had an earlier (6 am) article based on Fallon himself confirming his firing: “Fallon says EMU regents have fired him.” This second (first, really– the second one I read) article has some interesting info on how much firing Fallon is going to cost (not as much as I thought, frankly), and also how we are likely to hear from Fallon in the future about all this:

Fallon, 60, said Sunday that he would comment at length in the days ahead on his termination and his tenure at EMU. The dismissal letter thanked Fallon for his contributions to the university and wished him and his family the best, Fallon said.

“As a citizen, I am disappointed in this hastily called meeting, without any opportunity to be present or to respond,” Fallon told The News Sunday night. “I have a story to tell and intend to tell it.”

Fallon said the letter did not spell out terms of his dismissal, but he expected to discuss those soon. His employment contract states he can be terminated at any time by the board and would receive a year’s base salary either in a lump sum or prorated over 12 months at the board’s discretion, provided he has not been convicted of a crime. The agreement lists Fallon’s annual salary at $225,000.

It would be interesting to hear what Fallon thinks about this stuff; oddly, we haven’t really heard much in terms of his opinions at this point.

I’m guessing that we will hear stories today about Vick, Hall, and possibly others.

John A. Fallon III fired at EMU

WUMO reports that EMU president John A. Fallon III got a letter of dismissal from the Board of Regents yesterday.

About time!

Is that a water tower, or are you just happy to see me?

I came back to Ypsilanti just in time to read this story in the AA News, “Greetings from … a photo concept,” which is about a local photographer who has capitalized on the rather suggestive elements of Ypsilanti’s own historic water tower.

I actually have a postcard from the artist featured in the story, a Miss SheLa (aka Shela Palkoski), who has a web site at www.missshela.com  Click here for some PG-13-ish images, though be aware that Miss SheLa seems interested in some feminist-oriented erotica in other places on her site.

The first time I saw the tower, my reaction was “Whaa??”  It’s hard to believe that times were that innocent 100-some-odd years ago that no one said “say, do you know what that looks like?”  Oh well, it helps keep Ypsi real, I guess.

And now, for no particular reason, a scenic view

Just thought I’d share a tiny piece of my vacation/family get-away up north.  I’m sure there will be folks out there in EMUtalk.org-land who know this view, and for the rest of you, feel free to speculate in the comment section.

Back to Ypsi (and budget crises and work and writing and such) tomorrow.

The Budget Explained

I love when Howard Bunsis, AAUP-EMU President, sends around his missives to faculty, the latest of which is pasted below.  Budgets, finances, marketing, and all that jazz are really incomprehensible to me (English prof), but they make all sorts of sense when Howard explains them.  Even if you might disagree with his conclusions, Howard gives you all of the data and sources of information that you will need to form your dissenting opinion, which I consider a profound sign of respect and sure road to more effective collaboration.  If that means that Howard has a ‘big mouth,’ well then, I say the bigger the better!  Continue reading
