Today the Student Leader Group held a press conference and here are two articles that have been written about it so far.
EMU students optimistic about university’s future
Some quotes from the article:
“A group of student leaders at EMU conveyed a message of optimism Friday, saying the university has improved its security and communications procedures.”
“Chris Bylone, president of the Graduate Student Association, and Alli Sheppard, president of the EMU Residence Hall Association, noted that student government representatives from other universities praised the access EMU’s student leaders have to top administrators.
“Other schools’ students are astounded at the relationship we have with the administration,” Sheppard said.
The students stressed their own role in safety, urging their classmates to lock doors and not let unescorted visitors into residence halls. “The president is not going to be at every door,” said Student Body Vice President Josh Lyon.”
Student leaders say EMU safer, more open one year after student’s death
“On the security front, all campus residence halls now display signs explaining that non-residents need an escort for entrance and safety escorts have increased along with campus security hours being extended, said Alli Sheppard, president of EMU’s residence hall association.”

I have never been more proud to be a graduate student here at EMU and that is thanks to the great student leaders I work with every day. I hope we can move forward as a university community for a positive future.

I commend all the student leaders for this proactive effort to stress the positive and how many improvements have been understaken at EMU in the last year. Good work, President Jones and all the other student leaders. Good press is always welcome.
Good press without substance though? Where’s the facts? Where’s the figures? Where’s the Bar Graph?
Where’s the actual analysis of for example # of Campus Dorm Break-ins this year versus last year. Number of Computer Thefts this year versus last year. Etc?
If GOOD NEWS spreading is just getting quotes from Greg Jones about how wonderful everything seems to be… Then I’d prefer more Bad News actually. Where’s the Good News with FACTS?
Too many Student Leaders think the MEANS is what’s important. The fact that things have CHANGED is what is important. Isn’t it about time these Student Leaders get educated that the CHANGES/MEANS utilized are worthless untill we have real, hard, factual evidence to justify the changes?
You don’t praise the purchase of a STOCK until you see that the stock you bought in the Stock Market is going up and earning you money first!
Why is it that historically our Student Government loves to see the CART before the HORSE?
““Other schools’ students are astounded at the relationship we have with the administration,” Sheppard said.”
What Relationship? The 9.5% Tuition Hike with Janice Stroh flat-out refusing to Greg Jones’s Face to allow him to know what the Tuition Hike is funding? That relationship?
Where even to this day any EMU Student could go into Greg Jones’s office and ask him face to face what the 9.5% Tuition Hike actually funded and come out with not a single answer to that question?
Or what about not knowing what any of our previous Tuition Hikes actually funded?
What about UTAC? What about Closed Door, Secretive Committee Meetings where even if a Student Representative is Invited to them they are forced to have their mouthes taped shut about anything discussed in the meetings!
What about Janice Stroh never bothering to inform the Students that Athletics got a budget increase and Academics got Slashed?
What about EMU Student Government’s own website not updated since August to explain any progress (if there even has been) on TUITION and BUDGETING and many other issues?
What Relationship? The one where the EMU Student Body gets together and over 1,500 of them vote against constructing the NEW STUDENT CENTER and it still gets constructed?
What Relationship? Jealous of what?
What actual input has an EMU Student had on On-Campus Security decisions?
What has happened as any direct result to a student’s suggestion?
Anyone know?
Anyone even know the names of the 1 or 2 students that take credit for the New Student Center Building? If we can’t even name them then how can anyone with a straight face say they are jealous of our “great” student to administrator relationship?
I remember Student Senators having NO WORDS about a document that was given to students about the EMU BUDGET which amounted to nothing (1 page in length)…
The EMU Student Leaders have always been unwilling to challenge Administrators on anything. Good luck getting PIN #s for DORM DOORS.
