Video game tourney coming to EMU
This falls into the category of “not my cup of tea,” but apparently, there’s a Halo 3 tournament/fund raising event being sponsored by a group called the Gamers Outreach Foundation. There’s a nice editorial about this in the AA News; apparently, Zach Wigal was going to do this last year at Saline High, but the folks out there chickened out when the discovered that this video came might include violence. Shocking.
Anyway, it sounds like a good cause, and I guess it’s fun if you’re into that sort of thing. I don’t know if this is really a spectator event though.

Fallon writing a book about EMU, Free Press reports
Today’s Detroit Free Press reports that ousted, discredited former EMU president John A. Fallon III is writing a book about his tenure at EMU. The newspaper reports that EMU lawyers have requested copies of his “book outline,” which may mean a book proposal, in court papers. Somebody will no doubt post a link the the article soon. But I have two questions about this: Who among the people who know John A. Fallon III would believe that he is capable on his own of writing a paragraph, let alone a book? And who would believe a book by him on EMU would be at all reliable? This is the former chief executive who has virtually no accomplishments as EMU president to brag about. That Fallon is apparently seriously engaged in preparing a book, or thinks the threat of doing so will help his struggle to get cash from EMU, demonstrates how badly the Board of Regents handled this president from start to finish. At no well run large organization would it have taken 5 months for the governing board to dismiss a chief executive officer who had either failed to ensure that the truth was told about a murder of a community member, or had participated in the cover up of the facts of that murder. Fallon’s sole defense for lies told to Laura Dickinson’s parents and the public about her death was that he too had not been told the truth — a defense that is premised on the president not doing his job. Letting psychopathic subordinates mislead you is not a demonstration of presidential leadership. Yet our Board of Regents – which, admittedly, was going thru a lot of confusion at the time — let Dr. Fallon stay on for months and months after the utter failure of his presidency was made plain as day.
Michigan Tech tosses union
I haven’t seen the whole article because I don’t have a subscription to The Chronicle of Higher Education, but I thought this might be something regular reader here might find interesting: “In Rare Move, Professors at Michigan Technological U. Vote to Drop Their Union.” The only part I’ve read so far:
Faculty members and administrators at Michigan Technological University are dealing with years’ worth of tension that flashed into public view last week when professors there voted out the union that had represented them for just over three years.
Both supporters and opponents…
That’s all I got. But still kind of interesting.

AA News – “Judge considered for EMU presidency”
I do not want the 1st person to say “I told you so!” BUT check out this news story.
Judge considered for EMU presidency
Thoughts?

The Judge up for Prez, Or So Says the AA News
There is an article in the Ann Arbor News confirming the rumors that Judge Shelton is a candidate for EMU presidency, one of the dozen candidates now remaining in the pool: “Judge considered for EMU presidency.” The fact that the Judge’s name was released earlier than those of the other candidates and alone of all of the candidates suggests that his application is getting special treatment of some sort, if not in the search committee or with the Board of Regents, at least in some parts of the community at large.

Oh, drat…
I think I screwed something up in terms of the EMUTalk.org template. I’ve been needing/wanting to update the version of the template for a while now anyway, so maybe this will motivate me to do it. Anyway, things might look and act a little weird around here for a while. Sorry for the construction/inconvenience.

Athletics set to receive “biggest gift ever”
From Ward Mullens just now:
The campus community is invited to join Regent Tom Sidlik and EMU Athletic Director Derrick Gragg as they announce the largest gift in the history of EMU athletics, Friday, Feb. 29, 10 a.m., Room 300 of the student center.
Oh, goody….
On the one hand, I appreciate the fact that this is probably a gift/donation coming from someone who said they wanted it tied to athletics at EMU or not here at all. In other words, it was probably a “take it or leave it” kind of deal. On the other hand, is this something we really need as we enter the next budget crisis here at “Education First” U? Brace yourself for Friday, I guess.

Happy Winter Break! Any big plans out there?
I was going to post some kind of YouTube movie to celebrate the vacation, but everything I found as a result of the search “Spring Break” brought up bikini contests and the like– probably not completely appropriate for here. In any event, I hope everyone has a good time/a good rest/an opportunity to catch up.
Any exciting travel plans?
Personally, I’ll be using this break to get caught up on stuff. I kind of took my “break” a bit early with a trip last weekend/earlier this week to Orange Beach, AL. A little Jeff Foxworthy for my tastes, but the weather was good, my son had a great time with Grandpa and Grandma, and I golfed well. Anybody else?

Speaking of budgets: how do state fund increases square with budget cuts?
About a week and a half ago, a regular reader/contributor to EMUTalk.org sent me the content below the “read more” line about a 3% or so increase to higher ed being proposed by the state. I didn’t post it back then because I got busy with my “day job,” and also because I was busy much of last week taking advantage of my quasi-sabbatical status to take a little road-trip.
However, in light of the recent rumors discussed here, these articles from just a couple weeks ago does raise some interesting questions. Has the budget picture changed that much in the last two weeks, or are these $3 million+ rumors legit, or is there something else going on here?
