Orange Taylor retrial begins today

I just heard on WEMU that the Orange Taylor retrial begins today, which I find kind of odd only because I had not read about this in the paper or heard it on any of the local TV stations or what have you.  Of course, Taylor is being retried for the murder of Laura Dickinson in December 2007.

  1. March 31 is the date that was set for the retrail, back in the fall. Over the weekend, there has been a spat of publicity for it, statewide, but no doubt far less than we’ll get in the next week or so.

I will not be saying much about this trial as it unfolds, but I have three comments now. First — will the new defense lawyer in this case make any arguments that were not invented by former EMU VP Jim Vick and his associates in the first weeks after the murder of Laura Dickinson? The first defense lawyer basically had nothing to base a claim to reasonable doubt on other than what the University officials had suggested in that early period.

Secondly, I understand that the VP for Advancement and head of the EMU Foundation, who John Fallon appointed a couple of years ago, has, as of this week or next, taken a new job at Central Michigan University. Our gain, Central’s loss; he is terrible and unethical. This VP had oversight of the university communications office, and he tolerated the deceptive statements made by that office, did nothing to ensure that the truth be told, and did nothing to discipline the subordinate officials in that office who perpetuated the lie of “no foul play.” He was part and parcel of the coverup, just as his subordinates were. He should have been fired for cause a year ago, but instead he was allowed, as Fallon’s pal and defender of the cover up, to draw his paycheck while doing virtually nothing to earn it.

Lastly, and most importantly, my heart goes out to Laura Dickinson’s family and friends: to her fine parents, her brothers, and her boyfirend and all her other loving friends and family. Nobody should ever have to suffer the loss of a loved one thru murder; and nobody should ever be lied to about the cause of death of a loved one who’s been murdered. She was the kind of student both parents and a university community could be proud of. We at Eastern owed her much better than we gave her. God bless her family and friends, during this stressful week and for all time.

  2. My thoughts and prayers to the Dickinson family as they have to go through another trial. I watched the first trial and was stunned that Orange Taylor wasn’t convicted. I graduated from Eastern in the mid 90′s and Jim and Helen Vick are friends of mine. My thoughts go out to everyone in this tragedy.
