Check out Eastern Echo Beta

Speaking of web site redesign, The Eastern Echo has a new web site layout that looks pretty nice. It looks like they are using drupal to power it, which is a software that has some advantages over WordPress (what EMUTalk.org uses), but it is just one or two notches too hard/geeky for me. Maybe I’ll have to see if I can’t get a drupal lesson or two from the Echo folks.

It looks good. And best of all from my point of view: this now means the Echo has an RSS feed, which I will soon be including as a link on this site.

  1. Wow I’m really impressed with that site. It seems very professionally put together and quite navigable in contrast to their old page.

The new freshmen moved in today, so I hope everyone is excited and ready to get back to the fun of a full campus and the fall semester this week!

I’m very proud of the Echo staffers because they put this site together themselves! It looks professional, but they did not hire professionals.

Many, many of our competing schools have settled for commercial templates that let outsiders establish the online student newspaper format in cookie-cutter style, with many schools’ sites looking exactly the same. Those companies require that *their* advertisements have prominence (think Channel One…) over local advertisers. Our independent student newspaper wanted to maintain independence online, as well.

Please help spread the word that we have a new online Echo.

  3. Like I said, drupal is a fairly advanced software, so my hat goes off to those guys for pulling it off. Carol, maybe you can put me in touch with their techno person?
