Last week, it was the “M Edition;” this week, it’s “EMU & You” in the Ann Arbor News. Here are some links/quotes/brief thoughts on at least some of the articles:
- Regents to ease up on the reins With new president chosen, board can focus on educational goalsI’m not sure the quotes from members of the board are as decisive as the headline though.
- Eastern Michigan University strengthens security with cameras, text-messaging I think this is kind of old news….
- Tuition hike puts Eastern Michigan University in the middle Two passages I found interesting:
In the last five years, tuition has increased 43 percent at EMU, a trend mirrored around the state. In 2003-04, resident undergraduates paid $5,627 in tuition and mandatory fees.
Like all Michigan public universities, EMU has struggled with diminishing or flat state appropriations and increasing costs for items such as energy. The state increased EMU’s appropriation by about 1 percent this year, but the total of $78.6 million is still about $9 million less than five years ago.
and:
Martin says she wants to focus with staff and students on building the campus rather than constructing a budget that’s merely a menu of cuts and layoffs. “I really do want to work together on increasing enrollment,” she said.
EMU ranked in the middle of tuition increases among the state’s 15 public universities. The increases range from 13.2 percent at Grand Valley State to 3.4 percent at Wayne State University.
- Lots of people have advice for Eastern Michigan University president Paragraphs of wisdom from students and staff at EMU, including EMUTalk regular Kirk Nagel.
- Susan Martin getting to know people and places at Eastern Michigan University A pretty good piece, but mostly a recap of what Martin has been up to to make a good first impression.
- General ed program is a winner. I agree with that sentiment personally, but if you want to start an argument among faculty, ask them what they think of the new gen ed.
- EMU forming policies for podcasting in the future This is one of those things where there is a story behind the story, but a more accurate way of putting it might be that EMU and this committee is figuring out how to put forward an official EMU presence on iTunes. I’ve used podcasting in my teaching off and on and sometimes with iTunes for years, and I don’t think I’m the only one.
- Award-winning forensics team a point of pride A nice story about EMU’s fine team.
There are a couple of other pieces too, but this is the bulk of them. Read up because this is probably the most positive attention EMU is going to get from the AAN this year.
