And what would EMU smell like?

Apparently, there’s a company called Masik that is creating what it calls “collegiate fragrances.” From the “about” part of their web site:

Masik was founded by the Masich family in 2007 to create a fine fragrance line for the collegiate market. Masik is the only company of its kind – creating distinctive fine fragrances that reflect each school’s unique and distinguished character.

So far, you can only smell like Penn State and the University of North Carolina.

The smell of EMU? I dunno; how about poultry fat, maybe with a little bit of engine grease (a nod to the auto industry) and pine, with just a tad of lavender, just to balance it out?

“Transformation 101″ (or, if technology is driving down the cost of instruction, then why is tuition still increasing?)

Now that everyone’s turkey/Emu omlettes have settled:

EMUTalk.org regular Public Crabgrass sent me a link to a provocative story very worthy of sharing here: “Transformation 101,” which was in the Washington Monthly and written by Kevin Carey, who is a researcher at a D.C. education think-tank. I’m not entirely sure I agree with the basic premise of the article, that technology has “transformed” education, thus making it possible to teach “better” with fewer teachers. But Carey makes a lot of intriguing observations in a complex piece that deserves to be read.

One quote about sports and buildings that I will share for now that connects to some of what we’ve been talking about at EMUTalk.org lately. Carey’s argument that the cost of instruction is going down, and colleges/universities are spending the money on increased tuition in other places, including sports and building projects:

The NCAA recently revealed that among 119 Division I-A universities, the typical athletic department lost $9.3 million in 2006. That’s up from $6.1 million in 2004, a 50 percent jump in just two years. The growing deficits have to be made up from other sources, like tuition. And construction spending is always popular; new libraries, buildings, and student centers with climbing walls are good for marketing purposes—and they create plenty of blank space on which to engrave the names of generous alumni.

But like I said, read the whole thing– a very good article. And thanks for the link, PC!

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

So, what will sitedad be eating for the upcoming holiday? Well, this Apple Stuffed Emu Steak looks promising, and who doesn’t like emu eggs for breakfast?

Actually, I’ll probably be having a pretty traditional turkey-n-fixin’s kind of break, though I will check back with EMUTalk.org once in a while. Have a good holiday, everyone!

Oh, and PS: This just in from Ward Mullens:

While you are enjoying your Thanksgiving, remember to watch the EMU Marching Band perform in America’s Thanksgiving Parade from Detroit. The EMU Marching Band will appear in the parade for the first time in University history. The band is scheduled to appear on WDIV TV Channel 4 at 10:03 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 26.

No need to start firejeffgenyk.com…

… because the deed has been done. According to MLive, EMU football coach Jeff Genyk fired. This is hardly surprising, but I thought I’d pass along a couple of paragraphs I found interesting:

[Athletic director Derrick] Gragg said a search for a new coach will begin immediately. Genyk, who was hired in 2004, will be paid for the remainder of his contract, which runs through 2010.

Gragg also announced that former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr will serve as an unpaid advisor during the search process. Gragg said the university will also interview for a search firm to assist in the process.

Through 2010?! Jeez. And the way that Michigan played this year, I’m not sure how badly we want Carr’s help….

“EMU action for a better EMU”

Below “Read More” is an email I received recently from EMU alum and once in a while EMUTalk.org poster, Eric Brown. I’m not sure I agree with his particular recommendations about which Board of Regents members to endorse, but I do agree that this is the sort of thing that people who care about EMU ought to get involved in.

Which losing score is which?

The Emus loss twice this weekend, once in football and once in men’s basketball. The scores were 55 to 52, and 62-47. Which game was which?

In PH asbestos abatement news

This was in my email the other day and I know there has been some asbestos talk here previously, so I thought I’d pass it along. By the way, there was a similar asbestos abatement earlier in the year that raised some concerns and I received a couple email messages about it, too. But I wasn’t quite sure how to explain it, and it seemed to me like it was more a problem of reporting than it was of bad work. If anyone wants to comment on that situation here, feel free; in the meantime, news on the upcoming abatement (November 25) below the “Read More” part.

A little quasi-live blogging of Susan Martin on WEMU this morning

While having breakfast this morning, I did a little note-taking/a little “live blogging” of Susan Martin’s visit to WEMU. I think this is a monthly thing, more or less. Not surprisingly, she didn’t really say much. Anyway, my notes on what she said below the “read more” part:

Let me know how “history” turns out

Ward Mullens sent an email around this morning about the inauguration ceremony for Susan Martin:

You can participate in EMU history by attending the inauguration ceremony of Dr. Susan Martin at 11 a.m. today at Pease Auditorium. Dr. Martin will be invested as the 22nd president of Eastern Michigan University. She is the first female president in EMU’s 159-year history. There will be a campus reception and celebration at the Student Center Ballroom immediately following the ceremony.

During the history-making, I’ll probably be waiting for the furnace guy to show up at my house (just a check-up, no big deal). But I’m sure there will be EMUTalk-types there; let’s hear your impressions!

Pray-Harrold renovations: Once again, I’ll believe it when I see it

Big stuff going down on campus this week: Frank “Post Secret” Warren gave a sold-out talk in the ballroom last night, the official/symbolic ground-breaking of the Mark-Jefferson science complex was today, and President Martin gets the inauguration treatment Thursday.

But I have to say that I still have Pray-Harrold on my mind, as does the Ypsilanti Citizen: “Large projects in EMU’s future.” And by “large projects,” they really seem to mean mainly a single project, as in Pray-Harrold.

But before I get to the “read more” part: let me once again remind folks about the “Pray-Harrold renovation final begins” pool here at EMUTalk.org, and, because of the small number of entries so far, let me announce that I am extending the deadline for entries until December 31, 2008. More on that in a near future post.
