In PH asbestos abatement news

This was in my email the other day and I know there has been some asbestos talk here previously, so I thought I’d pass it along. By the way, there was a similar asbestos abatement earlier in the year that raised some concerns and I received a couple email messages about it, too. But I wasn’t quite sure how to explain it, and it seemed to me like it was more a problem of reporting than it was of bad work. If anyone wants to comment on that situation here, feel free; in the meantime, news on the upcoming abatement (November 25) below the “Read More” part.

> On Tuesday November 25 at approximately 9:45 a.m. asbestos abatement

> especially those in IT. As with all abatement projects, air

One Response to In PH asbestos abatement news

  1. From someone who would prefer to remain anonymous:

Here’s a typical mishandled asbestos notification. This was a repair, so one *should* move quickly on these things; I do have to wonder why this stuff isn’t done on weekends/midnights (probably costs more).

The original message was sent to Sally Lucas (building administrator) and Connie Schaffer (supervisor of area where work was done). Sally forwarded on the message to department heads. My boss notified the people in his department, but NONE of the bargained-for types in IT (CS-nesses, PT-nesses) were notified., Dunno about the AP-nesses down there.

Notice that the original e-mail was sent out on a late Friday afternoon, which pretty much guarantees little to no audience. That’s why lots of people resort to announcing bad news on Fridays.

On Monday November 11, at 8:30 a.m. personnel from Next Generation will be abating asbestos in the west mechanical room on the first level of Pray Harrold. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this work, do not hesitate to contact me.

The only way we found out about the mistake was because one of the faculty here assumed (1) that the date in the e-mail was correct, and (2) misread the date and assumed the work would be done a week earlier than the stated date. Which means–as it turned out–he erroneously arrived to the correct date.

The asbestos abatement of the damaged pipe insulation in the basement mechanical room at Pray Harrold has been completed and the area has been cleared for repair work. This clearance is based on both a visual inspection and air monitoring results from a third party independent industrial hygiene consultant. The air monitoring results are consistent with EPA post-abatement air monitoring criteria for re-occupancy, less than 0.01 fibers/cubic centimeter.

The incredibly cavalier attitude toward errors (OOOPS! I endangered people by accident. Sorry!) is WAY too pervasive here.

Seems the university wants to shift responsibility rather than act responsibly.

On the bright side, I was trying to find some good “High spots” about Deming because of a conversation I was having with members of the EMU community regarding NCA accreditation, AQIP, and why we’ll do a very good job of screwing up AQIP.

This gives a name to something we’ve all seen for far too long:
