“Eastern Michigan men whip Wayne State 67-47 without coach Ramsey”

What’s this all about?

[EMU men's basketball coach Charles Ramsey] was nowhere to be found at the arena, serving the start of a three-day suspension, the university announced earlier on Monday. It was discipline for his role in an altercation with an Eastern Michigan student – who happens to be a roommate of EMU senior guard Zane Gay – outside the locker room at Calihan Hall in Detroit after the Eagles’ 62-47 loss to the Titans on Nov. 22.

Ramsey, who did not return messages left on his cell phone Monday, will resume his job Thursday.

Athletic director Derrick Gragg, in New York City on Monday for college football Hall of Fame ceremonies, spoke briefly via cell phone.

“A thorough investigation of this matter was conducted. I take this matter seriously, and I’m satisfied that the coach does as well,” Gragg said. “I will not comment additionally on this matter.”

Anybody know anything else about this little incident? It seems very soap opera-ish to me.

By the way, this article also reported that there were 590 fans in attendance at the game. I realize this is the end of the semester and everyone is super-duper busy, but that’s pretty lame. You’ll see high school basketball games with more people in the stands….

  1. The passive voice when used to describe investigations is always enough to produce doubts about how thorough an investigation was.

  2. 1. “three-day suspension”

    — not too much to complain about.

Bobby Knight, after having won 3 national championships at IU, was shown the door after a confrontation with a student.

Woody Hayes, whose accomplishments at Ohio State are too numerous to list, was handed a one-way ticket home after giving a love tap on the shoulder pads to an opposing player who ended up on his sideline after intercepting a pass.

    2. “there were 590 fans in attendance”

    a. One way to improve attendance would be to promote the athletes, coaches, cheerleaders, dance team, and students.

The “basketball” program at the Wayne State game had a full page devoted to the president and the regents as well as an additional full page devoted to the AD.

There were short sketches of only 2 players.

It’d be nice to see a program with photos and sketches of the head coach, all of the players, the cheerleaders, and the dance team — the ones doing the heavy lifting.

    b. Attendance might improve if a group that is considered integral at other colleges and universities would be considered as such at Eastern.

When the schedule was set for Meet the Candidates recently, almost every group known to the universe was given a specific time slot — except for one group that was noticeable by its absence.

As appears to be the case elsewhere, those in this group are apparently not considered “members of the EMU community.”
