Bill Ayers at EMU?

I know that Bill Ayers– the education professor and former 60s radical who was accused of being a terrorist who “paled around” with Obama– is going to be speaking at U of M today as part of a book tour. But I also read on Mark Maynard’s blog that he is going to be at EMU this afternoon, in the Kiva Room of the Student Center, from 2 to 4 pm. Anybody out there know anything about that?

  1. Terrorists go about doing bad things for the sake of fear. The Weather Underground did their bad things for the sake of freedom from an oppressing government who continued to fight a losing war and felt like it was okay to beat people nearly to death for organizing and protesting. While I don’t necessarily condone the violent methods the WU used to conduct their protests, I don’t believe they should be called terrorists. They tried not to harm any people and only destroy buildings, and that is evident in their plans and messages. For example, when they put the bomb in the US Capitol building in a restroom, they alerted people working there so they could evacuate before it went off. The Weather Underground believed it was the “machine” of the government that was wrong, not the people working for it, and that it had become so corrupt and wrong that the people needed to become free of it, not much different than when we decided to break away from Britain and start the Revolutionary War.

One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. And Obama should be proud to have been friends and colleagues with someone who cared so deeply about the integrity of our country. I wish I was in town to see Ayers speak, I’m sure he has some great things to say, having been so entrenched in the much more active generation in a similar era that we live in today.

  2. I heard that he was going to be here last week – I’m strongly considering checking it out.

  3. Terry Gross had an incredible interview with Bill Ayers on Fresh Air. It was November/December–sometime after the election. If is certainly worth listening too.
