Martin on the recent dorm armed robberies

EMU spokesperson Ward Mullens sent around an email last night/this morning (12:30 am, I believe) as a “message from the president” about the recent armed robbery in the lobby of Sellers Hall. My basic take on this is Susan Martin’s philosophy for dealing with crime on campus is very straight-forward: simply do the opposite of our previous president, the “What would John Fallon NOT do?” approach.

By the way, there was also another crime alert about an off-campus armed robbery by three men. Kind of scary stuff out there.

After the “Read More” is what Susan Martin said:

To the University Community,

By now you have most likely heard there was an armed robbery on main campus early Friday morning. Students in a lounge in Sellers Hall were robbed, after someone let three men in a locked side door. One of the men had a gun. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

I want to take this opportunity to assure you we are taking every step possible to ensure the safety and security of this campus.

Some of those actions include:

· Authorizing overtime for the EMU Department of Public Safety to step up security and police presence and complete the investigation as quickly as possible.

· Taking immediate action through student judicial services to identify and take appropriate steps against anyone who let these individuals in and jeopardized the safety of fellow students

· Walking through the residence halls, starting at Sellers Hall, between 10 p.m. and midnight Saturday by me and Regent Jim Stapleton, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Bernice Lindke and Police Lieutenant Robert Heighes.

· Sending additional communications to those living in the residence halls and parents to update them on additional security actions taken.

Finally, I have had many conversations with Police Chief Greg O’Dell and Lt. Heighes and feel that progress is being made in the investigation.. You will be informed as soon as this is resolved.

Sincerely,

Susan W. Martin
President
Eastern Michigan University

One Response to Martin on the recent dorm armed robberies

  1. Regent Stapleton must not have do do to do over at the U of M. Nice thing to do, however, could this be a liability for the University?
