“Woman changes story,” Frat suspended, and sitedad on the road

From Freep.com, “Woman changes story of EMU rape, but cops not done.” Basically, the victim of the rape at Kappa Phi Alpha is now saying “she ‘probably consented,’” which sounds to me like a young person still not completely sure what happened. In the mean-time, the fraternity (which, as others have talked about here, is not exactly like a “real frat” like the others on campus) has been suspended in some fashion.

By the way, the sitedad is operating EMUTalk.org from an undisclosed and remote location during this holiday break, at a very nice hotel with somewhat sketchy internet access and on a family trip. Updates and approvals will be somewhat infrequent until Sunday.

  1. Eastern Michigan University student tells police she doesn’t want to press charges

The 18-year-old student who initially told police she was raped at an Eastern Michigan University fraternity party last week has now told police she does not want to press charges.

The woman told Ypsilanti police her memory of the incident began to return over the weekend.

Lt. Craig Annas also said that the man with whom the woman now says she had consensual sex did not turn himself in for questioning Tuesday as planned, but is continuing to talk to police by phone.

Annas said that police now believe the man is not a juvenile as originally thought, but he is not an EMU student.

Annas said the investigation into the incident will probably not wrap up until early next week.

Prosecutors could still opt to file sex assault charges, since the woman had been drinking vodka straight from a bottle she took to the party, and was intoxicated. That means she may not have been legally able to give consent to having sex with a man in a bathroom at the Kappa Phi Alpha fraternity.

Annas said police have confirmed that none of the four men who were initially in the bathroom smoking marijuana were members of the fraternity, but several of them may have known fraternity members.

Fraternity members initially told police that they required everyone at the party to show EMU identification before they were admitted to the house.
