Craig Willis was an example of “The Wolf”?

Kind of an interesting/amusing article in Inside Higher Ed today called “Send in the Wolf.” “The Wolf,” as fans of the movie Pulp Fiction will recall, was the Harvey Keitel character sent in toward the end of the movie to sole a major “problem.” But in this case, the problem solvers are presidents and other administrators who come in from groups like the Registry for College and University Presidents, the very organization that provided EMU with interim president Craig Willis a few years back.

According to the article, “The Wolf” work is a growing industry in higher ed.

  1. He was a great “wolf”, in my opinion. He really pulled the campus together in a time when EMU was really being dragged through the mud. Plus, those suits were killer.

  2. I agree with everything Math Geek said, but at the same time, Craig Willis was in a position where he held all the cards. He was here for one year, so he didn’t have to tip-toe around delicate issues because he wasn’t going to be there in a year.

  3. Jim is right, but essentially, this was the same situation as “The Wolf,” too…

Anyway, as the article puts it,

“There are times when this is just the thing you need: Bring someone in who can calm down a situation,” Nelson said. “You’re not going to be able to attract a sitting president [otherwise]. Bring one in to provide an example or get a turnaround started or a program begun that someone can see is an attractive occasion for taking on a [permanent] presidency.”
