EMU hires new general counsel

Annarbor.com reported the story here, but the EMU web site has a more detailed press release here.  A few highlights:

  • Gloria Hage, who was most recently a VP and deputy general counsel at U of M.
  • She was involved in a “smoke-free task force” at U of M, which is a kind of strange detail to me given the talk about smoking on campus off and on….
  • JD and BA (English!  Yea!) from U of M, and her starting salary is $230K.  Nice work if you can get it….

Sweet! To modify an InterTubes meme:

    1. Create sinecure for Geoff Larcom out of nowhere.

    2. Create administrative associate/assistant/whatever sinecure out of nowhere for President Martin.

    3. Build domed practice facility to reward a perfect football season.

    4. ???????

    5. Profit!

With this much money floating around EMU, I’m sure our AAUP and PT (but actually administrators (along with clericals and AFSCME types) according to AAUP propaganda) contract negotiations this summer will reflect our fiscal pastures of plenty.

  2. Gloria Hage appears by all accounts to be highly qualified to be EMU general counsel, and I welcome her to the university community. Goodness knows that EMU’s difficulties in recent years have been greatly worsened due to the poor (to be be understated) quality of leadership and legal skills displayed by the outgoing university lawyer, Ken McKanders.

  3. George Tirebiter (clever moniker): I notice that your anonymous contributions to EMUtalk.org usually mention me, and not in a complimentary way. I’d like to meet you in person to find out the roots of your concerns, which evidently date back to my days at The Ann Arbor News. Let’s talk. I am at glarcom@emich.edu.

Tell ya what, Geoff. I was down at Pop’s Sodium Shoppe trailing a red with red hair and picked up a copy of the communist-based Detroit Free Press (not a red-blooded purveyor of Truth, Justice, and the American Way like Fox News, the Detroit News, the Associated Press, and Booth Newspapers) and I noticed that you had NO problems telling them that the EMU student with TB worked at a campus eatery. Nor did you have any problem telling annarbor.com the same thing. Yet, somehow, that little piece of information didn’t make it into the e-mail you sent to campus. Nor can it be found on any official EMU propaganda page.

Why was it important enough to mention to off-campus publications but not important enough to let the entire EMU community know? Were you too busy fluffing yourself for off-campus “real media” scrutiny? Did you figure that we EMU-types are too dumb to read anything but what you compose/cut-and-paste?

Just why is there such a huge discrepancy between the information you gave to off-campus entities and what you spoon-fed to campus?

Once upon a time, back when you were investigating all sorts of malfeasance at institutes of higher education in Michigan* while working as an Ace Investigative Reporter, you would have been all over a shameless cover-up like this. Likewise, all over an alarming preponderance of sinecures created just because someone in high places wants a job for somebody.

Why don’t you take this opportunity to be open and honest about this, like you wanted EMU to be with you during your relentless-persecution-of-EMU-at-the-drop-of-a-hat days?

Maybe you could show the jaded members in this audience that the word “transparent” doesn’t mean “invisible” when it comes to how EMU’s administration operates these days. Isn’t that how you’re supposed to be earning your pay? Or are you getting orders from someone else to do something else?

That would, so to speak, be par for the course.

*Institutes must be east of US-23, north of I-94, south of Huron River Dr., and west of N. Huron St. in order to qualify for the attention of any Ace Investigative Reporter.

  5. George, Take your beef with Geff somewhere else. You obviously refuse to meet personally with him like a man to discuss your issues.
