This was passed along by EMU-AAUP president Susan Moeller and I thought I’d give the group some publicity here too:
The EMU-AAUP supports the organizing of the adjunct lecturers and I am sending you the following information about their organizing efforts and a rally they will have this Tuesday, March 16th starting at 1 p.m at the Student Center.
More details after the “continued” part, but it looks like this is kind of an all-day sort of event– that is, if you can’t make it at 1, stop by later. I’ll be on the road, so if anyone goes and has anything interesting to say about the event, let me know.
From the Adjunct Lecturers Organizing Committee:
The Adjunct Lecturers Organizing Committee, ALOC for short, together with Michigan American Federation of Teachers have been organizing adjunct lecturers since last summer and we now have signed up 276 out of 468 current adjunct lecturers. Our sign up rate is about 75%. We have filed a petition with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission and are now negotiating with the
university about who will be in the bargaining unit. Here are two
recent ECHO articles about us:
[1] Adjuncts fight to form union

[2] Regents listen to union pitch

Together with faculty and students we are having a rally this
Tuesday:
1. To rally support for our campaign, and to deliver community-signed
petitions,
2. To recognize that all teachers are worthy of being covered by
collective bargaining agreements,
3. To have an alternative recognition ceremony for adjuncts who’ve been here ten years or longer.
Here are the scheduled activities for this Tuesday.
