I thought I’d go ahead and group three sports oriented bits ‘o news together in one post:
- EMU Men’s Basketball goes down, but it was close and after double-overtime, 97-98 to Akron. So Ramsey will coach another year, but let’s see if we can’t kick it up a notch next year, huh?
- EMU Women’s Basketball gets shellacked, 72-46. And again to Akron, which just goes to show you that there’s not much value in the name of your mascot– the Zips definitely beat the more war-like eagles. By the way, I’m linking to the official EMU sports page for these two, and it’s kind of interesting to me that you don’t really find out how badly the EMU women’s team was beaten until literally the last sentence of the article. Talk about burying the lead.
- An alert EMUTalk.org reader and football fan sent me this,”Ex-Lions assistant Phil Snow joins EMU.” I don’t know enough one way or the other to know if that’s a good or a bad thing, though the Lions did manage a better season, so who knows?

I would’ve liked to see EMU oust Akron in the MAC Tournament. I didn’t watch the game, but I have heard from basketball-crazy friends who say it was one of the better games in conference tournament play so far this week. I also noticed on Twitter (following the #emu hashtag) some comments suggesting that Ramsey let loose with expletives that were clearly transmitted via television. It’s unfortunate to lose; double-unfortunate to have your coach broadcasting profanity beyond the players’ ears.
Will Phil Snow make EMU football better? Who knows. Although, under the current nowhere-but-up conditions, all coaching changes will result in equal or better results. Snow appears to have a personal history mentoring Ron English when they were together at Cal.
I do not believe the Men’s BB team coach has earned another year. This was the best team he could have, next year without Carlos Medlock & Dubbins we are going to be the punching bag of the MAC again. And he has simply not gotten much of the most physically gifted athlete EMU BB has ever seen, Bowdry…mostly on the mental composure department. He has simply not done enough to win on the court after 4 years, it is time for a new beginning! Bring back Ben Braun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the women’s BB team coach should learn from the Akron debacle. Maybe it was payback for running up the score on the hapless Rochester team… shame on you.
The BB programs have two measuring sticks: Ben Braun and Suzie….the current coaching staff will never reach what they did…Well, the women BB team may have a chance if James sticks around and gets enough talent around her. But Rams just does not have what it takes to take EMU to the next level! This must be obvious enough to the AD by now whose hiring record on the big sports teams is awful at best!!
Actually, to date nothing as been decided about Coach Ramsey. Lots of rumors, that’s it. In terms of women’s bb, this year’s team actually did better than expected due to the inexperience of the team. This was an excellent hire and the measuring stick will be next year for the women’s team. It would be nice to also read about the success of teams such as the 2010 Men’s swimming and diving team. Congratulations to the MAC champions!
