Let me say again at the outset that I do support the decision to freeze tuition and fees at EMU for 2010 for all sorts of obvious reasons. I’m just a little worried about it for all sorts of other reasons, and I am now also wondering just how long this idea has been kicked around Welch Hall?
In his statement as the VP of Faculty Senate, Mahmud Rahman wrote (among other things) “The approved 2010-11 EMU budget, and the zero tuition increases, however, was neither discussed nor received input from the University Budget Council, where one third of the members are faculty representatives, prior to presenting it to the Board of Regents. Obviously, we remain puzzled at our exclusion from the input this year.” That may or may not be a problem, given that the BoR and the administration do get to set the budget, with or without input.
Anyway, this morning I saw a really good television ad about 0/0/0, and after a little fishing around the EMU web site, I found this page all about the advertising for the 0/0/0 efforts. (I would embed the commercial here, but because of the way it’s set up, it’ll automatically play and that’s kind of annoying– go click the link to see for yourself). This TV spot and the radio ads are quite good, and have to be the sort of thing that have been in the production stages/works for weeks and weeks by now. Which makes Rahman’s comment about the lack of input all the more interesting.
Like I said, I don’t want to be a naysayer here, I really don’t. It just sort of seems like there’s something going on here….

Where can I buy a 0% t-shirt? I wonder how much we paid those actors? (I don’t know for sure that they were, I’m just guessing) Someone should ask the students from the band if they knew why there were asked to march in front of the SC and make 0s with their hand…..and when they were asked.
