What’s up with EMU email?

I can’t get my EmuMail to work, and it’s been that way all morning.  What the heck?  Is Pray-Harrold construction to blame?

  1. It’s a campus wide failure. There is a note now on the main EMU webpage saying it’s a hardware failure with the vendor. They put this note up after I called and asked what was up, and suggested that they should communicate publicly rather than let the rumor mill alone run communications on this failure (as has been the case in past).

Things like this happen at the very worst times – such as the first day of the term, when you need to contact classes to let them know what building/room they are meeting in, etc.

    Hopefully it’ll be fixed soon.

  2. I don’t think any actual PH construction has begun yet – they’ve closed the building, but many offices (meaning stuff, not people) haven’t yet been moved out. This failure, I am told, happened in with Merit in Ann Arbor, and is affecting our campus but isn’t centered here.

MeritMail apparently finally had a hardware failure http://it.emich.edu/displaynotice.cfm?notice_id=506

Michigan Tech is also down https://status.it.mtu.edu/

  4. Some sort of IT dashboard along the lines of google’s would be useful: http://www.google.com/appsstatus#hl=en

  5. It’s not quite as good as the Google example you have here John, but EMU IT does have a way of finding out what’s up with various systems it deals with/handles:

As of the last time I checked (4:20-ish), they are saying that Merit is saying we might be up and running by 5 pm today. We shall see….

We’ll be lucky if it’s back up this evening. EMU seems to be painting a better picture than Michigan Tech which says:

“Merit reports that the first two attempts at recovery were unsuccessful, and that they are at the same status regarding the storage array. They continue to work with vendor engineers.
At this point, we will be updating this item every 30 minutes, or as there is a change in the issue status.”

  7. Well, it appears to be up and running again.

It’s never good for email to go down for hours at a time, especially when you’re paying a vendor a fair amount of money so it doesn’t ever go down. That said, this seems to be the first time that Merit really dropped the ball and generally speaking, I’m still pretty happy with the service/interface.

It’s hardly the first time they’ve dropped the ball.. it’s just the first time it’s been big enough that everyone at EMU has been affected. Take a look at the history of status’s on Michigan Tech’s page or the archives of EMU. There have been ongoing problems off and on for a while..
