Actually, I’m once again playing around with the layout here a bit. One of my regular readers and frequent correspondents mentioned to me that he had a very difficult time with the color scheme. I don’t know if this is a diagnosable usability thing or just an aversion to that khaki color, but I thought I’d try a different option to see if there was any feedback. What I think I’d really like is some wise WordPress and/or PHP/CSS coder to come up with a way for reader to pick their own color schemes, but that might be too much of a project….

Count this as a vote against the blue color scheme. It’s too dark a background color to give a good contrast against the text.
Well, bless your heart Steve. You’ve done infinitely more in addressing an ADA issue in less than 24 hours than EMU has done over the past six? seven? ten? years. I once worked in Jim Vick’s shop (ResNet) and brought up this issue (Certain color combos trigger migraines in less than 60 seconds. I can take Zomig, but there’s a definite risk of heart attack or stroke.) Vick’s response was “Is this an ADA issue or a Kirk Nagel issue?” He decided that it was a Kirk Nagel issue and happily ignored federal guidelines. Sounds kinda familiar, eh?
And while he is gone, his legacy, cronies, and methodologies linger on. As does my inability to use EMU’s web site because I think the “sick baby diaper” color scheme isn’t worth risking my life.
Anyhoo….
Blue is always a good color. Except for the totally colorblind, we can all see blue. Personally, I like black test on white backgrounds. Oliver Willis has a pretty nice site modeling that. For now, you could darken your text more and maybe lighten the shading a bit. I am *not* a fan of pastel print.
My mom (retired fourth grade teacher) said that once she got her kids reading at grade level she stopped color coding things. Maybe 1985 4th-grade reading levels are today’s college level and I’m expecting too much in terms of functional literacy.
Heyyyyyy, ever notice how “khaki” is very close to the scatalogical “kuku” or “kaka?” Coincidence? I think not.
Yes, the morning meds are kicking in.
Yeah, I have to tweak the colors a bit more, I’d agree. There’s some other stuff too with this look I’m not sure about, like the way that some of the text gets sized here and there, the ways in which bulleted lists are not bulleted, etc.. Hmmm.
I like some of the features, but don’t like some others. But since readership is pretty low in the summer (and I’m teaching a class about web design right now!), I’ll probably be playing around with it more as the weeks go on.
