Jeez-louise, what’s that smell?

All I know is that the second floor of Pray-Harrold smells like vomit or something. I don’t know if anyone has called buildings and grounds or if there’s any other information or what, but does anyone know what that is?

PU in PH….

  1. Alert EMUtalk readers: A Physical Plant supervisor checked this out, and confirmed the smell at Pray Harrold is being generated by the deicing material that the grounds crew uses on new concrete and environmentally sensitive areas. We’ve been using this product for three years and it’s made from beet juice, so it can have a natural smell in some conditions.

It’s thought that with the extreme cold it is being brought into the building on the snow on people’s shoes that has not melted yet, and then walked off in the entrance areas. This would explain why the smell is a bit stronger in the stairways near the entrance and less so farther into the building.

It’s also thought that this condition may be exclusive to the extreme cold. Grounds has used this product for three years with no issues (on smell), and it is said to be an effective, environmentally sound product. Grounds will review its application process during extreme cold weather to see if this condition can be minimized.

    • Weird. Well, you’d think that if they can make a product derived from beet juice to deice the sidewalks they’d be able to make it not smell so yucky. Anyway, good to know.
