Wait– Loppnow is fading into the distance quite yet

Instead, Provost Don Loppnow will spend at least a year as the VP Advancement (e.g., fund-raising). EMU President Susan Martin made the announcement via email yesterday. It makes some sense, actually: Loppnow has lots and lots of community contacts (obviously) and he’d probably be a good person to help find a more permanent advancement VP, someone who is more of a “professional fund-raiser” rather than a local community activist. Martin’s email is after the “Read More” part:

EMU hosts 2nd annual “Dig Pink” fundraiser, not to mention band day

Below the “read more” is a press release I received about a fundraiser/volleyball match that is going on this Saturday, October 18, the “Second Annual ‘Dig Pink’ Breast Cancer Awareness” fundraiser, which is part of a national effort to raise money to eliminate breast cancer. A fine cause indeed. The match starts Saturday at 7 pm.

Incidentally, one could have a full-blown EMU sports day on Saturday. EMU plays Akron at home at 1 pm, and, according to the web site, it is “band day,’ which will include 10 local high school bands playing in a pre-game and halftime show.

“EMU scholarships get boost”

From the AAN (and a bunch of other sources, including the EMU homepage) comes news that “EMU scholarships (will) get (a) boost.” George Cogar, who is an EMU alum and now a psychologist living in Charleston, SC, along with his wife, are donating $1 million toward scholarships for students who have financial need. Thanks, Dr. Cogar!

Addendum:
WEMU just had a brief interview with Cogar on their news.  Cogar spoke of how he himself was a commuting student from humble means when he was a student at EMU, and he hopes his donation can help students who are similar circumstances.  WEMU also reported that Cogar was very impressed with the fact that Martin had been named president and he might not have given the gift if a less qualified person had been picked as president.

“EMU gifts at all-time high”

This is kind of old news around here, but I’ll link to it anyway:  “EMU gifts at all-time high,” from the AANews.  Two quick thoughts for now:  first, this just goes to show you what a year of relative stability can do around EMU– at least that’s what the article quotes Ronald Miller (the associate VP for advancement) as saying.

Second, I’d really like to figure out a class to teach up at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science.  But I’d have to figure out a way to talk the Art, Biology, and/or Psychology department into that one….

“EMU sets record for private gifts”

From Crain’s Detroit Business, “EMU sets record for private gifts.”To quote from the article:

Preliminary figures show the Eastern Michigan University Foundation reported cash gifts exceeding more than $7.1 million, the highest in the school’s history, plus in-kind contributions approaching $800,000.

The total represents an 88 percent increase over the 2006-07 total of $4.2 million.

Go figure– maybe the result of decisive action at getting rid of Fallon? Maybe the result of the foundation actually going out and working hard to raise money? Maybe something else? Whatever the reasons, good for the foundation!

Martin’s first action as president: giving EMU money

I actually heard about this from someone coming out of the reception today with EMU President Susan Martin, but it’s reported in this mlive/AANews blog entry: “New president of Eastern Michigan University commissions excellence fund with $10,000 donation.” From the article:

Speaking at a press conference shortly after EMU regents formally approved her appointment, Martin noted the pride in the university cited by EMU alums, staff and friends of the university she talked to during the presidential search process. She urged EMU supporters to join her in contributing to the excellence fund.

“If you love EMU, take a dollar and send it too the office of the president. If you’re doing well, put in $5 or $20. Send it to EMU to show the world we are proud of our university,” she said.

Her remarks came after the Board of Regents meeting at 9 a.m. that lasted less than five minutes. All eight regents voted to approve the appointment of Martin, whose selection had been announced Sunday afternoon.

First off, I wish I had five minute meetings.

Second, Martin is definitely off to a good start here, taking a page from the Mary Sue Coleman play book, I think– didn’t she donate a bunch of money when she started over at U of M? And, as far as I can gather, Martin has now donated more money to Eastern Michigan than the last three presidents combined.

Insiders say that Janice Stroh hired a part time asst. for herself at $144,000 annual pay rate

The headline for this post just about says it all. I cannot absolutely confirm that this is true, but I’ve heard it enough, from people I consider reliable and well informed, so I believe it overwhelmingly likely to be true; I’ve not seen documents that prove this (but I’m told they exist). Further, it is reported that VP Stroh hired this assistant without the required approval for hiring someone, thus violating University rules. And the rate of pay would make this assistant one of the highest paid university employees — not bad work if you can get it, eh? All this, plus VP Stroh’s widely acknowledged dismal job performance over the last year, apparently explain the motivation and timing of the decision to put her on paid admin. leave. Normally I don’t repeat rumors that I can’t myself verify to be true, but the widespread concern around campus for why VP Stroh was removed from her duties requires an explanation.

The fine line between “fund raising” and “selling out:” two IHE articles

I just thought I’d pass along a couple of Inside Higher Ed articles that might be kind of interesting to the group, especially given some of our talk here about fund raising.

Athletics set to receive “biggest gift ever”

From Ward Mullens just now:

The campus community is invited to join Regent Tom Sidlik and EMU Athletic Director Derrick Gragg as they announce the largest gift in the history of EMU athletics, Friday, Feb. 29, 10 a.m., Room 300 of the student center.

Oh, goody….

On the one hand, I appreciate the fact that this is probably a gift/donation coming from someone who said they wanted it tied to athletics at EMU or not here at all. In other words, it was probably a “take it or leave it” kind of deal. On the other hand, is this something we really need as we enter the next budget crisis here at “Education First” U? Brace yourself for Friday, I guess.
