Pay no attention to the odd layout

Just in case you are wondering:  I’m messing with the layout of EMUTalk.org based in part on some recent updates to wordpress, so it might look kind of odd for a while.  But one of the features of this new set-up is I can have random pictures easily appear at the top, so if you have EMU images you’d like to see here, let me know and I’ll be happy to include them in the rotation.

Happy July 4 and the beginning of EMUTalk’s summer vacation

As was the case last year, I’m sending EMUTalk on a summer vacation, one that more or less corresponds to my own summer “break” from that pesky professor job, which isn’t a complete and total vacation but definitely a work slow-down interrupted with some travel here and there.  You get the idea.  If something really interesting happens, I’ll go ahead and post about it, and I might spend some time here and there trying to tweak with/mess with the layout and functions of the site.  But other than that, don’t expect much here until early August.

But before I go, I had to post briefly about the annual July 4 parade through Ypsilanti.

Lady Liberty + Jesus = Ypsilanti Parade In most ways, the parade was pretty much the same as it ever was: floats mixing the metaphors of patriotism and religion, a couple of area high school bands, some various local groups kind of marching/kind of wandering down the street, a very old John Dingell riding and waving, etc.

What made it a little more weird this time was it went down Michigan Avenue instead of the usual route on Cross, which is messed up (especially in Depot Town) because of construction.  Now, I’ve seen this basic parade a lot– probably 10 times now– and it always seems to suffer from a lack of decent spacing between parade participants.  It’s common to see a float, a group walking and waving flags, and some kind of antique car all scrunched up next to each other only to be followed by a five minute break in the action.

But the median strip in Michigan Avenue threw things for an additional confusing loop.  The parade started down one side, and then it shifted to the other side of the median.  And then it shifted back, and then shifted back.  At one point, the parade was going down both sides of the street at the same time, a sort of parade racing with itself.  My wife and son and I tried crossing the street a couple of times to see the shifts, but we eventually gave up on that.  It turns out sitting in the middle of the street with a swivel chair would have afforded the best view.

The other weird thing was that Susan Martin was marching in it.  Not that it’s weird that the president of EMU would be in a parade, but just the way she was in it seemed kind of strange to me.  First off, she was alone– no other suits, no board members, no cheerleaders or whatever, no nothing, just her.  Second, she was kind of stuck in-between groups, some group of people waving flags and some political candidate group on the other side.  So because of that, if you didn’t know better, you’d wonder why a woman wearing an EMU t-shirt and waving at the crowd was in the parade at all.

I mean, I give her props for being in the parade– I think she was the only one there representing EMU in any fashion– but I would think that she could have convinced a couple other people to go with her.  Maybe next year, someone in marketing or communication could throw it out there for EMU folks to march along, pass out some flyers, stuff like that?

A brief reminder of “The Rules”

It’s come to my attention lately that some EMU football fans aren’t happy about some of the comments I declined to post.  You can see that conversation on the Facebook page for EMU football here.  It’s at times like these (and with all the budget cuts and layoffs and other excitement lately) that it might be worthwhile for some to review “The Rules, version 2.1.” Read on your own, but a couple of highlights:

  • EMUTalk.org is not associated with Eastern Michigan University in any way, and it is not only a staff and faculty blog. Lots of people in the community read and post on this site, and we talk about all kinds of different things, including EMU sports.  I happen to work at EMU as a tenured professor, but I consider this site a sort of twisted hobby, one I pay for out of my own pocket and/or with the modest financial contributions from fans.  It’s about EMU, but it is not EMU.
  • EMUTalk.org is not an automatically open space; rather, it is what I would describe as “mostly self-moderating,” but every once in a while, I feel the need to step in.
  • The key rules for commenting here are be civil, debate and disagree responsibly, don’t keep saying the same thing over and over again, don’t take up too much space, and comment in a way that encourages discussion and doesn’t stop it.
  • In my view, the “FOOTBALL IS KING” stuff was getting a little old and repetitive, and the comment that I rejected that is the subject of this Facebook post was very long with lots of links, the sort of comment I typically reject regarding the topic.  Sorry, but it was time to move on.
  • Who’s the judge of this?  I am.  And to quote my rules, “Many will see these rules and guidelines as unfair, dictatorial, and inconsistent. So be it. Despite the use of the impersonal phrase “the administrator” over and over again, keep in mind that the administrator is a human being, often reads too quickly because of a very busy day-job, does this project as a hobby and out of the goodness of his heart, and, like so many others (Walt Whitman immediately comes to mind), the administrator is large and contradicts.”

Anyway, keep all that in mind.  Thanks.

10,000 comments later…

The next comment on EMUTalk.org (as of this morning, at least– June 13, 2011, at about 7:15) will be comment #10,000 since EMUTalk.org started almost five years ago in September 2006.  That might not be a lot for The Huffington Post or something like that, but for a little blog about EMU (and rarely emus), I think that’s pretty good.

Turkey turkey turkey….

I’m not quite sure what this says about me (I’m sure it is nothing good), but I find this video kind of humorous– at least about 30 seconds worth:

Anyway, ’tis the Thanksgiving season again, and while I won’t be traveling to undisclosed locations this year (for what seems the first time in a decade), I will be busy doing non-EMUTalk things.  So I’ll leave you for the rest of the week with a couple of questions to ponder:

  • Has anyone thought seriously about maybe turning the whole week of Thanksgiving into a “Fall Break” of some sort?  It seems to me we’ve been creeping in that direction ever since Wednesday became an “energy savings” day; why not add Monday and Tuesday to that list?
  • Who thought it was a good idea to schedule the last football game of the season on the Friday after Thanksgiving?  Is it possible that anymore than a couple hundred people will show up to this game, which will almost certainly be a blow-out since Northern Illinois is the only team in the MAC this year that is remotely “good” in Division 1A. I don’t care how many cars they give away–er leases they give away.
  • Has anyone out there ever been to the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade?  Worth it?

Happy travels, happy break, see you next week.

In a slightly bluer mood…

Actually, I’m once again playing around with the layout here a bit. One of my regular readers and frequent correspondents mentioned to me that he had a very difficult time with the color scheme. I don’t know if this is a diagnosable usability thing or just an aversion to that khaki color, but I thought I’d try a different option to see if there was any feedback. What I think I’d really like is some wise WordPress and/or PHP/CSS coder to come up with a way for reader to pick their own color schemes, but that might be too much of a project….

EMUTalk.org news: new look, social networking features

As you can probably tell, I’m playing around with a new “theme” here at around EMUTalk.org, mainly as the result of some technical problems I was experiencing with the previous layout and design.  There will probably be some more tweaking and revising as the summer goes on, but I’m happy to see at least one “thumbs up” vote here.

Besides the layout, I’ve also done a few things so EMUTalk.org can participate better in this whole “social media” thing– chances are you’ve heard of it.  What that means here is:

  • You can now easily share EMUTalk.org posts with a variety of different social media applications, including Facebook, and Twitter (and a bunch of other similar sites). You do this by poking at one of those buttons under where it says “Share and Enjoy” at the bottom of each posts.
  • I’ve set up an EMUTalk.org Facebook page.  “Friend” me if you want.  If the various software/settings I’m working on actually work, links to blog posts will appear on the EMUTalk profile.
  • Finally, there’s the “EMUTalk Talk on Twitter.”  This is made possible through something called “Twitter Tracker.” The way that it works is if you write a Twitter “Tweet” that contains the hashtag “#emutalk”, then it will show up on this site under the “EMTalk Talk” heading in the right-hand column.  We’ll see how this works out.  The upside of it is it’s another way of participating in the EMUTalk conversation; the downside is I have no way of controlling what people post with that hashtag.

Semi-vacation for EMUTalk.org this month

I say “semi-vacation” because I’m not going to completely turn the site off, nor am I going on an electronic fast of some sort, swearing off the Internets and computers for a month.  But I will be in and out of town a bit until the beginning of summer term, and June is probably about the quietest time around campus anyway, so don’t expect any updates here until the beginning of summer term.

Well, unless something interesting happens….

A short break followed by a longer one; and once again, rarely is this site about Emus

I will be out of town at a conference starting later today, and thus not posting to EMUTalk.  Along these lines, I’m planning on taking a complete month off from the site in June.  No particular reason, and I don’t plan on taking a month long computer “fast” or anything like that, but I will be doing some more traveling then too, and a little “va-kay” seems in order.

In the meantime, let me pass along the latest story of an Emu on the loose, this time in South Carolina.  I came across a number of articles that included photos like this one, and even this one from The State that includes both a slide-show of photos and a video! (Apparently, not much has been happening in South Carolina lately).  I can’t embed the video, but do take a look.  It is rednecky hilarious.

Oh, if only the EMU Eagles had a running back as elusive as this thing….

See y’all next week.

Second annual NCAA Men’s basketball pool and the moral of the story from this year’s tourney

The second annual EMUTalk.org College Basketball Tournament Pick’em pool kind of ended in the form of a massive tie, mainly because all 10 participants picked either Kentucky or Kansas for the win.  Regardless of our collective lack of pick ‘em prowess, congratulations to MyBracket and Mehmet’s 2010, the tied winners at 63 points and thus edging out most of the field that tied at 62 points.

Now, a couple of observations about the NCAA tournament this year in general:

  • Neither Butler nor Duke has a football team worth mentioning (I’m not sure Butler has one at all), and both universities are on the whole much better known for their academics than their sports.
  • If you look at the list of winners of the NCAA tournament, you will see some of the usual suspects from the big conferences, the same kind of schools that have big-time football programs.  But you’ll also see a lot of smaller school/surprises on this list, too.
  • This year’s tournament had many examples about how the nature of the sport means that upsets are a lot more possible in basketball than they are in football.
  • And hey, the NCAA tournament is a lot more exciting than the Bowl Championship Series.

So, with that in mind, it seems to me that the moral of this year’s tournament (as it the moral for me with every year’s tournament, actually) is that EMU ought to really concentrate on basketball and let football die on the vine.  I mean, I’m no sports expert, but I think it’s a no-brainer.  Basketball is dramatically cheaper to run than football.  We have a terrible football stadium, but a pretty decent basketball arena.  Heck, we’ve even had some version of good men’s and women’s basketball teams in the past.

If we have to continue to have a football team, well, fine.  But let’s try to hire us a decent coach, let’s do some real recruiting, and let’s put a little energy into basketball, both men’s and women’s.  What do you say?
