Meanwhile, at Wayne State…

A couple of interesting stories in the news about Wayne State (and Michigan State, too) both from the Detroit Free Press:

  • “Wayne State cuts 200 positions in face of $32M less funding.”  The opening sentences say “Wayne State University has eliminated 200 positions, spokesman Matt Lockwood confirmed.  Of those positions, 80 were currently filled. The exact number of layoffs will be known once union bumping processes are complete.”  So what this suggests to me that they are laying off 80 people and not hiring 120.
  • “State: Tuition hikes at Michigan State University, Wayne State University didn’t break rule — technically.” I heard a version of this on the radio this morning:  depending on how you count it, MSU increased tuition by 9.4% and WSU by 8.4%.  And then there’s also the issue of various fees and such that are being implemented all over the place (and that includes at EMU, BTW) that aren’t tuition but certain that impact the cost of attendance.  It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

“MSU to buy EMU in Hostile Takeover Bid”

I missed this April Fool’s story over on Ypsinews.com, “MSU to buy EMU in Hostile Takeover Bid.” It’s a surprisingly elaborate article for a joke article, IMO.  Be sure to check it out.

Incidentally, I have to wonder if Steve Pierce and whoever else is associated with Ypsinews.com didn’t purposefully make a more ridiculous April Fool’s story after last year’s piece, “Porn execs eyeing Ypsilanti for new Studio space.” I remember a couple of people saying to me “hey, did you hear about that?” after that joke was published, and I remember others saying “that wouldn’t be a bad idea.”

Don’t forget! It’s March! It’s Madness!

So that means it’s time to pick your picks for the EMUTalk Tourney Pool for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Go ahead! Sign up! You’ll be glad you did!

In this particular version of the pool, I simply let the computer pick the top seeds for me, but in a version that I really entered, I picked a few surprises and upsets. I’d like to see Northern Iowa get a couple games in, but that would mean getting by Kansas, and that ain’t gonna happen….

BTW, good luck to Michigan State and Oakland University too!

Three of the many reasons why money confuses me

Earlier this week, EMU-AAUP President Susan Moeller sent around an email that said, basically, that EMU is currently running a $5.8 million surplus. “Given that our academic departments are suffering from a terrible lack of funding lets hope that the EMU administration uses some of this surplus,” Moeller writes, “to remedy the underfunding SOON.”

Earlier today, I was talking with a suit-type who I trust who basically said that what Moeller was saying wasn’t completely true because a) a lot of this “surplus” is really about about accounting changes, b) a lot of it is based on federal stimulus money that we all know is going to go away, and c) everyone is pretty sure we’re going to get cut big-time from the state next year.

And just now, a friend/colleague of mine who teaches at Michigan State posted something kind of alarming: “Possible MSU cuts: 30 programs, 2 departments, 600 jobs.”

So, what’s the deal here? Who is spinning the numbers at EMU, Moeller or the administration? How is it possible that EMU’s overall financial picture seems rosier than MSU’s? Anybody know anything?

FREE Friedman tickets available for U-M, WSU, and MSU; EMU not welcome (apparently)

About a week ago, I posted here about Thomas “The World is Flat” Friedman talking at EMU and wondering how it was that this event was being advertised at MSU and there seemed no information about it here at EMU. Regular EMUTalk.org commentator Alum posted information that more or less said that EMU students can get in just like everyone else: pay the $30 fee.

Well, according to this post at The Ypsi Tattler, that’s not the complete story.

EMU football played like EMU football

I didn’t get a chance to see the game yesterday, though this article, “Ringer leads Michigan St. to 42-10 victory,” suggests I didn’t miss much as an EMU fan. Here’s a quote from the article:

The Eagles managed an 80-yard touchdown drive to tie the game at 7 early in the second quarter, capped by quarterback Andy Schmitt’s 3-yard TD run. But the Spartans responded with 35 unanswered points.

Michigan State of the Big Ten owns a 37-6-2 record against current members of the Mid-American Conference. The Spartans have won 15 straight against MAC teams since stumbling twice against Central Michigan in the early 1990s.

Eastern Michigan (1-1), which hasn’t had a winning season since 1995, is 0-24 all-time against Big Ten teams.

Any silver lining out there, emu fans?

“Wyatt part of transformation”/Game on BTN at noon today

This is quite a bit more football coverage than usual here at EMUTalk.org, but an alert and interested EMUTalk.org reader sent me this link to share: “Wyatt part of transformation: Sexton star is helping EMU out of doldrums.”

Thomas “The World is Flat” Friedman talking at EMU; how do we get in?

I found this info via my feed, but it was published on the Michigan State University news site:

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Three-time Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman will be in Michigan to outline an emerging agenda that will make “green power the next great global industry.”

The program, featuring Friedman and remarks by University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon is Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 12:20 p.m. at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center. Registration for the Michigan Business Review’s “The Innovation Experience” begins at 10:30 a.m.

I don’t know if I could make it if I wanted to– pesky teaching schedules and such– but does anyone out there know if EMU students/faculty/staff/etc. are invited and able to go to this thing that is going to be on our campus?

EMU vs. MSU football: SpartyMSU has made their pick

This originally showed up as a comment, but it seems to merit a post of its own: John Opie at SpartyMSU has gone out on a limb and predicted victory for the 0-1 MSU Spartans on Saturday. Here’s a link to the post; here’s a quote from that blog:

One thing that is 100% Positive, you can bet the house on, Roll the Dice, it’s a Fur-Sure thing.. a Team Dressed in Green and White will Win Saturday… And with 100% confidence, it will be the Spartans… Frankly as a Brew Crew, we’re more worried when Bells’s stops brewing Oberon for the year….

I’d be curious to read what more football-oriented folk here might say, but it’s hard to argue with this. If EMU beats MSU, I am sure it would be the biggest win for EMU in football in modern history though. Still, at the end of the day, both teams will be 1-1.

A slight update:

I’m not sure if hell has frozen over or what, but on the sports page of the paper version of the AAN this afternoon/evening, I have to say I noticed that an EMU football story was above the fold– “Dantonio wary of Eastern Michigan.”   I couldn’t find a link to the story online, but the gist of it is that the MSU coaching staff is not planning on taking EMU for granted.  At least that’s what they say in the article….
